Shoes of a Nomad

By Kevin A.M Murray

When Bradley Labonte decided to reinvent himself, he made the decision to pursue journalism.

Born in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 7th, 1983, Labonte’s fate almost seemed inevitable.

Having lived in places such as Texas, Northern California, Indiana, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Mexico and St. Marten, one would almost call Labonte nomadic.

The fact that Labonte has lived in so many places is what separates him from your average young adult; it adds a bit of mystery when you meet a guy like this.

Labonte moved around a lot; he moved to St. Martens in the 7th grade where he had difficulties adjusting to their school system.

The new school system compounded by his parents divorce caused his grades to suffer and was the catalyst of his shriveled academic growth.

The absence of his father in his home had a significant impact on Labonte; his father was a role model whose love for sports had a huge influence on him and his love of sports.

However, because he was always moving to different inner cities his opportunity to keep playing sports and being a part of a team was limited thus, began his love for basketball.

After moving several times during his young age, Labonte decided to move to Rhode Island where he would make a fresh start and pursue his dream of becoming a journalist.

Labonte is now settled in Warwick (or so he hopes) and attends the University of Rhode Island where he takes journalism classes.

Being Half European White and Half Mexican, Labonte strives to beat the odds and change the path he once saw himself going down.

When asked to describe himself in three words Labonte said, “Young, Athletic and driven.”

The word driven is a stamp, representing Labonte’s hard work and determination.

Driving an hour everyday to get to class his first year, really shows how hard he is willing to work to reach his dream and Labonte is committed every step of the way.

A mature and settled Labonte is more determined and dedicated in the pursuit of his career.

He currently writes for the University’s 5-cent Cigar but that’s only the beginning for Labonte, as he plans on going to Law School after he graduates college.

He is no stranger to dedication and perseverance, being an injured veteran; he is used to working hard and seeing things through to the end.

Bradley Labonte is a man worth a thousand words, he has traveled places people can only dream about, done things that some may deem impossible but one thing is for sure, Bradley Labonte is not a quitter.
