McKenzie Martin Upcoming Journalist

By: Brooke McCarthy

“My parents wanted to pull me out of school, I had to make a deal with them I would never get a grade below a C+ the rest of my time in college.”

This is what McKenzie Martin said about the struggles she endured during her freshman year at the University of Rhode Island and convincing her parents she still was a motivated and hardworking student.  During her second semester freshamn year, Martin became distracted from her school work and lost her motivation as a student. Martin had all large lectures that attendance wasn’t required. Therefore she never went to class and her grades started to slip. In order for her parents to allow her to stay, she agreed to prove to them she was a hard working student.

Since then, Martin has shown to her parents she is a dedicated student and can get honor roll multiple semesters in a row. Continuing school has kept Martin’s desire to become a journalist alive. Following in the footsteps of E! News host Guiliana Rancic would be a career Martin could see herself having in the future. The public struggle of Rancic has played a major roll in guiding Martin towards journalism. Martin followed her battle with cancer and her attempts at getting pregnant closely; Martin said, “She has inspired me to not give up and fight for what I want while being a strong hard working women.”

Martin is a huge fan of Rancic who is an inspirational TV personel to many women. Although by many Rancic isn't considered a journalist she still has veered Martin towards journalism or possibly becoming a TV host through her charismatic personality. Martin shares the same passion for following the lives of the rich and famous as Rancic does on her show.

However, journalism was not always Martin’s first choice as a career. In high school Martin had wanted to become a teacher and had completed her high school’s childcare program that certified her to teach preschool. Currently, Martin works at Joyful Learning Child Academy right near the URI campus. She has worked there for two years and it’s influenced her not to pursue a teaching profession. Martin said she can't picture herself chasing after young children like she does now when she's older. In the pre-K room, where Martin works the children are rowdy and energetic at 4 and 5 years old. Martin said, “I prep them for kindergarten, we do math and science, and teach them to write their letters and numbers.”

Martin grew up in Taunton Massachusetts and attended Tauton High School. Taunton isn't Martin's favorite town to have grown up in, however she still feels a special conection to the place she was raised.Taunton isn't a far drive for Martin from URI so it's easy for her to go home and see her family. Martin enjoys being close to home right now but after she graduates she has no problem venturing out of her comfort zone.

When Martins' parents divorced she said she wasn't as devistated as most children. Martin has always seen it as the best thing possible for her family. Although she was only 5 years old when it happened, it has reduced the amount of problems in her family and both her parents are much happier apart. Martin just wants her parents to do what’s best for them.

As a result of her parents divorce, Martin has formed a strong bond with her mother. While she explains her older brother has leaned more on their father. Martin’s mother got remarried last year but until then has been a single mother supporting her two children. Her mother works at General Dynamics, which is a big company based out of Massachusetts that produces communication devices for the military. Martin said, “My mother is a strong independent women and I want to be like her. She makes me believe I can do anything.”

Martin recently marked her independence by purchasing a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta without assistance from her parents. But during finals in December another student backed into her car at the emporium. Martin was still crying when police officers came to take down her statement about the accident. This was one of the first things she had done for herself and she felt like it was ruined. Martin had been really proud of her accomplishment and still is today.

As a budding young journalist should, Martin follows the hosts of E! News and Entertainment Tonight on both Instagram and Twitter. Often she can be seen checking their pages for the latest updates happening in Hollywood. Recently, Martin met Entertainment Tonight corresponded Brooke Anderson. This was at a conference her sorority attended.  Anderson was a guest speaker and after the speech she did a photo op and meet and great. Martin talked about how this was very inspirational because of how much she loves Entertainment Tonight. She also mentioned how she was nervous going up to Anderson because she’s an avid follower of her work.

When asked where she hopes to be in ten years Martin said, “I want to have a career that I absolutely love and have my own house. Those are my two biggest goals for my 20’s right now.”
