The Truth about Dimitri Ashby

By: Brooke McCarthy

In high school at La Salle Academy, Dimitri Ashby was nicknamed Truth, which ended up sticking and turning into his rap name.

Ashby talked about how in high school he would go on random rants about problems or ideas and people said, “Oh this kid is speaking the truth.” The nickname stuck and for copyright and branding purposes his full stage name is Truth the Equalizer. Due to Ashby's dedication to his academics he was able to get a scholar ship to La Salle Academy, a prestigious high school in Providence.

One of the biggest influences on Ashby's life was the recent suicide of one of his close friends. Ashby was devasted at the loss of his friend and and couldn't understand why he one day decided to take his own life. Ashby said, "One day he was just gone. It still hurts me everyday that I had no idea about the pain he was hiding." This experience has taught Ashby to cherish everyday and he also dedicates a lot of his music to his friends memory.

Ashby realized he had a talent for writing in 8th grade when he entered a poetry contest. He wrote the submissions for him and his two friends, and the poems won first, second and third place. However, he humbly let his friends take credit for second and third place. This is when at 14 years old Ashby started taking rapping seriously and getting into music.

In the beginning his parents didn’t fully support their sons musical ambitions because they wanted him to attend college and get an education. Alsothey wanted him to try and find himself and realize exactly what he wanted to do with his life. They wanted him to have something to fall back on and be exposed to other possible career paths besides music. Ashby said, “I told them I wanted to work in the TV studio and or in the entertainment field with film.”

Ashby’s best friend Isaiah, who also raps, is a huge influence on him to work hard and follow his dreams. Along with his girlfriend, Beverly who he said pushes him to be successful with all his aspirations. Close friends and family help to keep Ashby grounded and realize his full potential.

After Ashby declared he was a film major, his parents became more supportive of his rapping career because they know he had a fall back plan. His parents realized he wasn’t making music just to make it and he actually is serious about being succesful in the music industry.

Just like J. Cole, his most prominent musical influential, Ashby writes all his own music. Ashby said, “Everything that has come out of my mouth on a track has been written by me.” Ashby likes to be really hands on with his music and to be really involved with every aspect of the creation of a song. Also, Ashby said, “I find my influence through my life and peoples' lives around me.”

As Ashby grew older, things for his family started to look up because both his parents had steady jobs and were able to work a lot to support the family. Many of the kids in his neighborhood however had very little and started to go down bad paths. Some of his close friends got caught up in gangs and with drugs. Ashby watched all this happen and it influenced and inspired a lot of what he raps about today. Ashby was able to not get involved with the wrong kind of people and he is still thankful even today drugs and alcohol didn't ruin his life like so many others around him.

Since, coming to the University of Rhode Island, Ashby has collaborated with other artist on campus including his best friend Isaiah. These collaborations taught Ashby a lot about himself as an artist. Ashby said, “Collaborating was a positive and negative experience. It pushed me forward in some ways but also held me back in others.” He realized when collaborating with other artist he would tend to rely on them too much. These experiences made Ashby realize he wanted to be more independent as an artist.

Frequently, Ashby performs in Providence but he also has performed in Boston. In Providence he has performed at the DV8 Lounge, middle schools and high schools, Lupo’s for a smaller crowd and at Aurora. An average crowd in Providence for one of his shows can be anywhere from 100 to 200 people. These aren't huge crowds but thats because the shows Ashby does aren't headlined by extremly prominent names. The shows he does are more underground events where you have to bring your own people. Regardless of the amount of people Ashby performs in front of, he is happy to just be doing what he loves.
