From Graduation to the Altar

By Bailie Mauriello

It’s been almost two years since Trevor Taylor, 24, proposed to his girlfriend Sarah Barber, 21.

For the past year, Barber and Taylor have been living together in premarital bliss in a small two-bedroom apartment they share with another couple and their dog Scruffy.

As of now, Taylor and Barber have officially set a wedding date. In June of 2018 the two plan to be married, but there are still a few obstacles left between them and the altar.

Even though they have set the date, little planning has been done for the actual wedding. Before any permanent decisions can be made for these two they are looking to sort out their financial situation first.

The only thing they know for certain is that they want to get married in Rhode Island surrounded by their family and friends.

But before they can even begin to start seriously thinking about that, Barber plans to graduate from the University of Rhode Island as a nursing major. If all goes as planned, Barber will be graduating this coming May.

Although her mother tries to help as best she can, Barber has been putting herself through college by working as a Home Care CNA. This past semester she was working almost 40 hours a week while managing school full time.

Although she currently works with the elderly, Barber one day hopes to be a midwife.

Taylor, who dropped out of college after a semester, had ‘dropped from job to job’ before becoming a security officer for Asset Protection Group (APG) where he has been for the past two years.

Between rent and Barber’s tuition, any chance to make official wedding plans has been put on hold.

If that wasn't enough, Barber and Taylor are planning to move to Missouri after the wedding, but have conflicting ideologies on how to handle it.

“We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it,” says Taylor, which is almost word for word on his comment about paying for their wedding.

Barber has a different view on the situation. “It makes me a little nervous,” Barber says, “I worry about things a lot more than he does.”

According to Taylor there are days when the stress of their situation gets to him. But any stress is 'totally worth it' in exchange for beginning his life with Barber.

Barber herself is looking forward to when college is behind her and she can start looking at the ‘fun side’ to being engaged.
