Hannah Burns

For the majority of her college career, Hannah Burns, age 20, has struggled with finding what she wishes to do with her life.

Burns initially came to the University of Rhode Island as Textiles Fashion,Merchandising and Design Major.

For a large portion of her life Burns had a serious interest in fashion, hoping to be a buyer for a large company.

In High School she loved creating collages and inspiration boards. At the end of her Freshmen year in college she switched to a major in Journalism with the intention of becoming a fashion blogger.

In High School she loved creating collages and inspiration boards. At the end of her Freshmen year in college she switched to a major in Journalism with the intention of becoming a fashion blogger.

However now as a Junior she claims that she has ‘grown out’ of having a career in fashion and is now considering a career in advertising.

Burns says that she loves to travel even though she hasn’t visited many places. But she is planning to study abroad next semester in Prague. Burns has an uncle working there as an Executive Creative Director. She hopes that she will be able to learn more about what he does.

For a short time, she considered becoming a teacher but after working at a YMCA summer camp for two summers as an instructor, she realized that teaching wasn’t for her.

Although she has overall had an indecisive college career, this semester has been particularly difficult for Burns. This summer Burns’s hometown Penbroke, Massachusetts experienced a tragic loss when one of her childhood friends died.

On June 10, 2016, Kenneth Matthew Benting, passed away at the age of 20 after his heart stopped while he was driving home from a hockey game. In his past Benting had suffered from minor heart problems but nothing that was deemed life threatening.

Burns talks about how many of her friends came together to help Benting’s family with the funeral preparations. Burns herself made collages for the events. She says that she has become closer to his parents and her own friends from Massachusetts then they ever were before.

However, returning to Rhode Island after the ordeal has proven to be a bit of a challenge. With her main focus, grieving for her friend, Burns plans for her future career has taken a backseat.

Through the course of her interests there has only been on consistent passion in her life. During High School Burns played field hockey in the fall and lacrosse in the spring.

Now in college Burns has joined the Woman’s Lacrosse team at URI. She says that lacrosse has been her outlet, especially after Benting’s passing.

“When I’m out on the field practicing there is no other place I would want to be,” Burns says, “Especially with fall coming around, just that brisk weather at five o clock, being out on the field, running around, it’s definitely my outlet.”

Burns has expressed a serious interest in moving forward and making serious progress in her career goals. However, the only thing that Burns is certain about is that she wants a job that is ‘changing and evolving and growing’.
