URI's Poor Connection

By Amanda Cintron

KINGSTON, RI -  The low quality wireless connection at the University of

Rhode Island is one of the biggest problems on it's campus.

David Porter, director of media and technology services, said plans

to improve the connection are going into effect this summer. One of the

reasons why the internet connections is so poor is due to the lack

of funding from the school, “It takes hundreds of thousands of dollars a

year just to maintain the network” said Porter.

Funds to upgrade the outdated hardware for the wireless connection

are being provided by the housing and residential life department.

Porter said they will be paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to upgrade the system this summer in the residential halls. “The dorms will have a superior wireless experience next year” said Porter.

Nabrissa Alves, a sophomore majoring in Nursing expressed her frustration with the wireless connection “I’m missing assignments or having incomplete work because of something that is out of my control" said Alves. She recalled one instance while studying for her anatomy course online she lossed wireless connection and was unable to hand in her assignment on time throught Sakai.

According to Porter  the improvement in wireless connection in administrative and academic buildings will take some time.
